Late on Sunday evening, Finland secured a place in next year’s basketball World Cup as the first European country. Susijeng’s place in the competition was secured by Sweden, which defeated Israel in the qualifying group match.
This is the second time Susijengi advanced to the final tournament of the World Cup. The last time was from 2015, when Finland got a wild card to the Games. So this is the first time that Finland made it to the Games by playing cleanly.
A year from now, Susijengi will travel almost 10,000 kilometers to the equator, as the World Cup will be played in the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan.
Most of the matches are played in the metropolitan area of Manila, the capital of the Philippines. The main arena of the games is the Philippine Arena, with a capacity of 55,000 spectators, located about 30 kilometers north of Manila. The arena is the largest indoor hall in the world in terms of capacity.
In addition to the giant hall, Manila plays in two smaller arenas. The other venues for the Games are in the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and the Japanese city of Okinawa. The island of Okinawa is located more than 600 kilometers south of the main islands of Japan.
Finnish fans traveling to the venue will have to get used to a significantly different climate than anywhere else in Europe. All the competition cities have a tropical climate, where it rains a lot while the temperatures are above 30 degrees at the same time.
Next year’s World Cup tournament starts on August 25 and ends on September 10. 32 countries can participate, of which apart from Finland, only the tournament hosts Japan and the Philippines and the Ivory Coast have secured their places so far.
