There are times when the horror genre suddenly explodes and one big movie after another hits the big screen. Then again, there are dry spells that make you wonder whether everything has already been told in what is probably the liveliest genre of all in this medium.
Horror movies may be experiencing a new heyday right now, with outlandish and eerie films like Get Out, A Quiet Place, Midsommar, It Follows, Berberian Sound Studio, Cabin In The Woods, I see, I see”, “Under The Skin”, “So dark the night” or “The Host”.
A savvy YouTuber has taken the trouble to condense the entire horror film history from 1895 to 2016 into one 12-minute video. For each year he has chosen one film (which might shock some movie buffs, because in some years the 70s released half a dozen big horror films), from “The Execution Of Mary Stuart” to “The Witch”.
Of course, the selection may not always be comprehensible, but it is impressive that the small film succeeds in showing the suggestive expressive power of the films with just a few images.
