Psaki: U.S. Written Response to Russia to Outline Ideas to Strengthen Sense of Security

The United States will present its proposals on security guarantees to the Russian side next week. They will contain Washington’s concerns about Russia’s actions and proposals for mutually strengthening a sense of security.

The United States, in a written response to Russia, will describe its views on how countries can strengthen each other’s sense of security, reported at a briefing by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki.

“We will put in writing <...> the serious concerns that we and our allies and partners have about Russia’s actions, as well as ideas about how we can strengthen each other’s sense of security in the future,” she said.

Washington will present its proposals next week, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said after meeting in Geneva on January 21. The parties discussed Russian draft security assurances submitted to the United States and NATO in mid-December 2021.

How did the negotiations between Lavrov and Blinken in Geneva end?

Lavrov noted after the talks that Blinken’s reaction to Moscow’s proposals was preliminary. The US Secretary of State promised to discuss this issue with partners and allies, as well as with other representatives of the American leadership, in the coming days.
