The week of Drenthe: the last flakes of snow and a second red deer in Drenthe

Increasingly concerned about the situation at the registration center in Ter Apel and Drenten can participate in a Citizens’ Council to think about the direction of the province. Below you can read the most important news from our province from last week.

Due to a car fire in the center of Assen, residents of two apartments are no longer able to enter their homes for the time being. Fourteen other homes had to be temporarily evacuated. “After extensive police investigation, we assume arson,” says Thijs de Jong of the Northern Netherlands police.

The last flakes of snow in the province for the time being caused quite a few problems in traffic on Tuesday. There was a heavy traffic jam on the A28 between Hoogeveen and Assen and there were several accidents due to the slippery road surface.

Residents of Drenthe will have more influence on the work of the province. Next year there will be a Citizens’ Council, in which people can discuss plans for, for example, housing or public transport.

Not one, but two red deer roam in Drenthe. The second specimen was seen on images from wildlife cameras in the area of Dwingeloo, Lhee and Beilen.

The situation in the registration center for asylum seekers in Ter Apel is alarming. There are too many refugees and there are still municipalities that refuse to receive asylum seekers. The National Migration and Integration Steering Table therefore resorts to a different method: municipalities must already accommodate status holders who will soon receive a house in a hotel in the municipality where they will live.

King’s Commissioner in Drenthe Jetta Kleinsma makes this call to 170 municipalities on behalf of the management table. “The status holders have been in the asylum seeker centers for far too long. This is partly why this problem has arisen.”
