The Week of Drenthe: Suspects in the Cas Steenbergen case and (artificial) ice fun in Assen and Emmen

A week in which two arrests were made in the investigation into the death of Cas Steenbergen, but also a week of artificial ice fun in Asen and Emmen. But there was even more news in Drenthe.

On Monday, the police announced that a 20-year-old suspect had been arrested in the investigation into the death of Cas Steenbergen. In the TV program Opsporing Verzocht, the police paid attention to the death after a visit to CH De Wolden in Veeningen in July last year. At first, the police thought it was a fatal accident, but due to new information, the police are now also looking at the possibility that 23-year-old Steenbergen died after an assault. A day later, a second suspect, an 18-year-old man, was arrested. Both men are from De Wolden and will be released later in the week. The 20-year-old man remains a suspect, the young man of 18 does not.

On Tuesday, Holland Casino will receive permission to build a new building in Eelderwolde, municipality of Tynaarlo. The casino was originally located in the city of Groningen, but burned down in 2017. The company receives permission from the municipal council for the new building, which will be located almost on the provincial border. Only ChristenUnie and CDA voted against, because they are against gambling in principle.

Now that winter is starting and temperatures are dropping, the warm living rooms of the Salvation Army will open again on Wednesday. According to Roelof Wolfs of the Salvation Army, the warm living room has a double meaning. “It is of course literally warm here. So if you cannot afford to turn on the stove at home, you can sit warm here and drink a cup of coffee. But it is also warmth in a different context. The coziness, for a moment an arm around your shoulder when you’re having a hard time.”

On Thursday, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) demanded twenty years in prison in the so-called trunk murder case. It revolves around the murder of Ralf Meinema, who was found in the trunk of his own car in March 2017. The car was half in the Stieltjeskanaal. Suspect Hans O. (45) was previously acquitted by the court, but the Public Prosecution Service appealed. The court in Assen did not properly assess the evidence in the previous lawsuit, the Public Prosecution Service believes.

The week ends with skating fun. Not on natural ice, because the frost just won’t last. The skating clubs in Nieuw-Buinen, Nieuw Amsterdam/Veenoord and Noordlaren are in the starting blocks to compete for the first marathon on natural ice. But the frost does not persist. In Assen and Emmen, artificial ice rinks have been set up in the middle of the city, where skating has been possible since Thursday (Emmen) and Friday (Assen).
