The Week of Drenthe: Summer storm rages over Drenthe, and French amusement park near Meppel

Summer storm Poly raged over Drenthe last week. Also in this Week of Drenthe attention to that storm and the damage that was caused.

Poly uprooted trees and disrupted traffic and public transport. In total, the damage is estimated at around 50 to 100 million euros.

We are also focusing on a possible new amusement park in Meppel. The French company Puy du Fou wants to build a large theme park near the Drenthe city. The park must be about 60 hectares in size. That is almost three times the size of Wildlands. You cannot go for a ride on a roller coaster in the park. The intention is to hold shows about the history of Europe and in particular that of the Netherlands.

And we visited Roden where De Hullen swimming pool is on the eve of a major makeover. A dip in the pool is not yet dangerous, but something has to be done. “If you do nothing, Roden will no longer have a swimming pool in about five years,” says manager Albert Douwsma. Alderman Alex Wekema also believes that something should be done. He dreams about a movable roof so that you can also swim in the open air.

Finally, we had some royal news. On Friday it was announced that King Willem-Alexander will celebrate King’s Day in Emmen. It will then be 22 years ago that the royal family visited our province for a party. In 2002 Queen’s Day was celebrated in Hoogeveen and Meppel.
