The Week of Drenthe: Monument of 1.5 million knots unveiled and Indonesian students in a pinch

GGZ Drenthe does not have to give the medical file of nurse Theodoor V. from Veenhuizen to the Public Prosecution Service. The court in Assen determined this on Thursday. The verdict is a downer for the Public Prosecution Service, but also for the relatives of the alleged victims of V., who are left with many questions about V.’s actions. The former nurse of the Wilhelmina Hospital in Assen is suspected of having killed several patients during the corona pandemic.

Broken shifts, unpaid travel time, working every weekend and almost no guidance. These are complaints from Indonesian students who are in a work-study program at Zorggroep Drenthe. They have been brought to the Netherlands by Yomema, who presents it as an innovative way to solve the personnel shortages in the healthcare sector.

As of July 1, 2023, the program was stopped for five participants because they were not expected to reach that level. They have received an unsatisfactory assessment for their internship twice and the rule is: end of the program with two unsatisfactory grades for the internship. Last November, two students were also sent back to Indonesia. There is now unrest among the remaining students, because a number of them have already had one unsatisfactory assessment.
