The Week of Drenthe: manure, nitrogen and staying out

Manure, nitrogen, farmers and companies. They came by a few times in the Drenthe news this week.

But the week started with staying over and vacation. It is possible everywhere in Drenthe, for example, you can find a bed & breakfast everywhere. After research, the municipality of Midden-Drenthe discovered that more than half of the B&Bs do not have a permit. Not out of ill will, but because people get to work enthusiastically without reporting it to the municipality. That needs to change, the council believes. There will be new policies, with new rules.

On Tuesday, a shocking lawsuit was scheduled for the court in Assen. A father who stabbed his son with a knife at the Boomkroonpad and then injured himself is on trial. Earlier, the man told the judge that it was a “twisted act of love”: he wanted to save his son from a bad life. Psychologists consider him less responsible, but also believe that the act can be held against him. The court agreed and sentenced the man to five years in prison and TBS.

Later this week, nitrogen came into the picture again, with the agricultural sector and also the industry. The farmers heard that the EU has told them to reduce the spreading of animal manure. And the cabinet came up with plans to reduce nitrogen. Peak loaders receive an offer to sell their company, and the industry must also contribute – or stone.
