The Week of Drenthe: BBB from scratch the biggest in Provincial Council elections

It was the week of the BoerBurger Movement. Caroline van der Plas’ party was the big winner in the provincial elections and won no less than seventeen seats in Drenthe. In the Week van Drenthe we also look back at other important news from last week.

“Aviation must become more sustainable, that is really necessary,” said Meiltje de Groot, director of Groningen Airport Eelde, on Monday at the presentation of the Ground Power Units at the airport. One of these Units, intended to supply stationary aircraft with electricity, will become completely nitrogen-free. The Units are now only used in construction and have never been used in aviation before. “Because we are a small-scale airport, we have more room to experiment,” says De Groot.

It is no surprise that public transport has been shut down in recent months, but strikes were not the cause this time last Tuesday. Due to a malfunction in traffic control in Zwolle, no trains were running in the north in the morning. With many stranded travelers who had to wait for hours as a result. A student was stranded in Hoogeveen from her ride in Zwolle. “Actually, we can’t go anywhere.”

Wednesday was election day in the Netherlands and more than 65 percent of those eligible to vote cast their vote for the provincial elections. That caused crowds at the polling stations throughout Drenthe and an early bird was lucky. In the morning he came to a polling station that was not actually open yet, but the doors were opened for him anyway. “They opened especially for me because I had to catch the train. So that was great.”

One party was the big winner of the elections: the BBB. As a newcomer, the party managed to win no fewer than seventeen seats in the Drenthe states. The mega profit for the BBB resulted in substantial losses for the established parties. For example, the VVD and the PVDA dropped from six to four seats and the CDA only has three seats left in Drenthe.

The Northern Netherlands police announced on Friday that two employees from Drenthe have been fired for serious dereliction of duty outside of duty. For one of the employees, it concerns behavior in a relational sphere, for the other it concerns serious dereliction of duty in the private sphere. What exactly this entails is not known by the police.
