Qhis is the open letter written on 31 July 2022 by Biagio Ciaramella.

“Today is the anniversary of our son’s death, a painful, heartbreaking event that changed our life forever and sentenced us to life in pain.

We parents died with him that July 31st, our heart broke and all this time we have been dragging ourselves to live a non-life life. There is no consolation for a mother and father who lose their child, the memories and pain for her tragic death are always present and grip our soul.

Our son, Luigi Ciaramella, was 19 when he lost his life due to a street murder, at the time defined as manslaughter.

We know that on that sad morning some people stopped on the spot who witnessed the accident, saw who moved Luigi and even a tractor coming out of a country lane. Nobody, however, has ever wanted to talk to us ».

We are very embittered, since everyone knew but no one spoke, there were no witnesses, nothing. We never asked anyone to testify at my son’s trial, but at least we would have liked them to tell us if that morning Luigi had asked for his mother, for his parents, if he had asked for someone’s help.

Unfortunately we only found indifference from everyone. Not so much for the accident, but for what they did not do: that is to reassure the family and tell what had happened that morning. The consequence for us was that we had to fight for the truth, also clashing with the indifference of the institutions ».

“Even today, after so many years, we are facing a process, we haven’t had justice yet, but we’re not giving up. We did not want a civil suit and eventual compensation, but we ask justice for our only child who is no longer there. We don’t want blood stained money, we would despise ourselves. We want justice, and we will fight against the indifference of all ».

Everyone’s indifference is the key. An indifference that has lasted for 14 years. It is the same indifference that made Diana Pifferi die of starvation, the 18-month-old girl who remained alone at home for 6 days. And she let Alika Ogorchukwu, 39 years old, be massacred on the street.
