The State of Berlin receives the SEZ back. A comment from BZ editor Johannes Malinowski Photo: Sven Meissner

The long-standing discussion about the future of the SEZ is finally moving.
The prominent eyesore on Landsberger Allee could finally disappear – the multifunctional building with what was once the most modern swimming pool in the GDR. Even today, many Berliners’ eyes light up when they talk about their childhood experiences there. The building was unique in the world when it opened in 1981, and the pool has been sealed since 2002.
The 5.6 hectare property has space for many apartments, and a school could also be built there. Someday hopefully life will return. Politicians must now weigh up which specific use would benefit Berliners the most.
Yesterday’s verdict is a victory for our city over shady speculators.
