‘Global Firepower’ is a website that uses public data to rank countries and their military strength every year. The 2024 ‘Military Strength Ranking’ includes the United States – as usual – at the top. The ranking takes into account factors such as the amount of military equipment available, the number of troops, army financing and geographical factors.
Russia is in second position. Remarkable given the great difficulties the Russian army is experiencing in the war with Ukraine. After Russia, countries such as China, India and South Korea follow. It United Kingdom, which ranks sixth (one spot lower than in 2023), is considered the best of the European class. The British spend more on defense than any other European country.
Each NATO member state is expected to spend 2 percent of its gross domestic product on defense. In 2023, Belgium was at only 1.1 percent. Single Luxembourg (which is in 109th place) did even worse at 0.7 percent.
