After the outbreak of hostilities, 3 million people left Ukraine, including about 157 thousand citizens of other countries, the UN International Office for Migration reported on Twitter.
On the eve of the United Nations refugee agency reportedthat since February 24, 2.8 million people have left Ukraine, and another 2 million have moved within the country.
3 March European Commission launched a special mechanism for granting protection to refugees. It will allow citizens who have left Ukraine to stay in the EU for up to a year, and then extend this period to three years. The European Union provides refugees with housing, medical care, education and work.
The vast majority of refugees are evacuated to Europe. Among the main countries are Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova. Refugees from the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics leave for Russia.
Mostly women and children leave the country. On March 4, James Elder, spokesman for the UN Children’s Fund, said that 500,000 children had left Ukraine. Men from 18 to 60 years old are not allowed to leave the country during martial law. This decision was taken by the Ukrainian authorities on February 25.
