Russia began to withdraw troops
The Ministry of Defense reported that Russian troops involved in the exercises in the western regions began to withdraw to their places of permanent deployment. The grouping of troops on the border with Ukraine began to decrease.
- Mikhail Podolyak, adviser to the head of the office of the President of Ukraine, after the withdrawal of Russian troops began, said that this was “the right signal.” Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said that Kiev would believe in de-escalation as soon as it sees the withdrawal of Russian troops. “Various statements are constantly heard from the Russian Federation, therefore we already have a rule not “we hear – then we believe”, but “we see – then we believe,” he said.
- NATO, however, does not consider the withdrawal of part of the Russian troops a sign of a real de-escalation. Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that a signal of Russia’s readiness to reduce tension would be the withdrawal of heavy weapons and equipment. Otherwise, Russia will be able to quickly restore the number of troops again.
