Interlagos qualifying turned into a frenzy when a thunderstorm arrived at the track area during the third qualifying stage.
The drivers began to slip on the track and drift to the side of the grass. The sky went completely dark and Fernando Alonso said night had come to the track area.
A storm eventually interrupted the final stage and the session was not resumed.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen managed to set the fastest lap time before the rain started. The recent world champion got ahead of the line and got to the track first. Thus, the Dutchman will start Sunday’s race from the pole.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc starts from the second frame. The third frame was occupied by Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll, who was not expected so high in advance.
Leclerc said in the interview that he had not experienced anything similar before.
– It wasn’t raining outside, but the car was really hard to drive. I am happy with the second place, said Leclerc.
Alfa Romeo’s Valtteri Bottas experienced disappointment. He missed the first qualifying stage and will start Sunday’s race from grid 18.
