Yvette Mimieux is dead. The actress died of natural causes at the age of 80, her family and another representative confirmed.
The actress and writer had her breakthrough with the science fiction novel “The Time Machine” by HG Wells, which was filmed in the 1960s. There she played the female lead alongside Rod Taylor. This was followed by films like “Where the Boys Are”, “Platinum High School” or “Mr. Luckily.” She was praised by critics above all for her special empathy in her roles.
In addition, she had various guest roles, such as in the Richard Chamberlain series “Dr. Kildare”. There she played a surfer suffering from epilepsy, where she showed her belly button in one episode, which was considered a scandal on American television at the time. Wide roles followed, such as a starring role on the 1970s series The Most Deadly Game.
Criticism of the portrayal of women in cinema and television
However, her attention and interests were not exclusively devoted to film and acting. Mimieux studied archeology and ran a business selling Haitian products. In the course of her career she also practiced as a writer. She was also critical of her role as a woman in the film and acting world of the 70s. Here she mainly expressed her dissatisfaction by emphasizing that women in series and films were “one-dimensional” and “superficial” portrayed.
In 1992 she finally took part in her last film “Lady Boss” and then withdrew into the real estate business. Mimieux was married to director Stanley Donen from 1972 to 1985, but they divorced after 13 years. She later married multi-millionaire Howard Ruby. Both have no children together.
