Britain’s National Crime Agency (NCA) will search for “assets of the President of Russia” and people associated with him in the UK, informs newspaper The Telegraph, citing its sources in the agency. To do this, the NCA will create a separate unit that will be able to attract additional resources, including from the British intelligence services.
“The unit will track the money of Putin and his friends,” the source said, adding that it would be “not easy.”
The day after the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, on February 25, Great Britain imposed sanctions against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Restrictive measures include the freezing of their assets, if any are found. Similar sanctions were imposed on February 26 by the European Union.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on the sanctions imposed by London, statedthat neither Putin nor Lavrov have accounts in the UK or anywhere else abroad.
