The teacher gap in Berlin is growing

92 days before the start of the 2022/23 school year, the teacher gap is greater than ever – there are 925 teachers missing in Berlin, i.e. one person per school. A comment from BZ editor Hildburg Bruns.

No, Berlin can no longer bake itself teachers, as Berlin’s governor Giffey simply stated.

But those who are there have to go where they are needed. In social hotspots, sometimes in remote areas. This also means a clear hint for headteachers: Schools that are still well equipped must learn to share.

It’s getting even more uncomfortable: Additional hours with extras that you’ve come to love or that you’ve hard-earned will be eliminated in some cases. The compulsory material takes precedence. A clear, honest message.

Because the teacher gap is growing from year to year, which will not change anytime soon in view of the pension certificates being issued more and more frequently.

And whether the comeback of civil servants will work the miracle of halting the exodus of teachers from the city remains to be seen.
