Chef Adam Jones (Bradley Cooper) is a cooking star. Over the years it has earned two Michelin stars, but has just returned from a dark period. After the great success came the decline. His Paris restaurant went bankrupt, mainly due to his addiction to alcohol and drugs. To re-emerge from the abyss, he spends three years in New Orleans, where he shells oysters. It’s the punishment you inflict on yourself for screwing everything up.
Once his sins have been atoned for, he is ready to go again. He does so by opening a new restaurant, with the aim of obtaining the third Michelin star. He moves to London, where enter as a chef in the restaurant The Langham managed by Tony Belardi (Daniel Brühl), an old friend met in Paris. The relationship between the two is partly adversarial. Tony forgives him all the excesses, including the surprise visit of a prominent food critic, Simone Firth (Uma Thurman).
However, Tony is guarded. He welcomes Adam, but at the same time sets some conditions. Among these, every week he must undergo regular tests, to prove that he is clean. For his part, Jones is focused on the new page of his life. Try to build a kitchen brigade that lives up to expectations. It hires talented young people, but also particular characters.
In the cast Sienna Miller, Riccardo Scamarcio and Omar Sy
Among all, Max (Riccardo Scamarcio), an Italian who has just returned to freedom after spending time in prison following an assault. AND Michel (Omar Sy), a Frenchman, whom Adam set a trap for years earlier, making him close the restaurant. Finally, there is sous-chef Helen (Sienna Miller), torn between the restaurant and her daughter, arrived at Adam’s court after leaving an equally renowned establishment. In addition to wanting to excel in the market, Adam lives in a great rivalry with Reece (Matthew Rhys), who has already obtained the star of him.
Soon the day of the inauguration arrives. The event turns into chaos, due to a negative critique that came out in a newspaper a few hours earlier. Jones can’t handle the pressure and the evening goes awry. Unfortunately, instead of admitting your mistakes, shift the blame onto co-workers. A heavy picture emerges and coexistence in the kitchen promises to be quite difficult.
To resolve the conflicts, the brigade points out some changes to be made, starting from the approach towards the collaborators and from the menu, which Helen will take care of. Finding her back against the wall, she accepts and the new course begins. Helen’s line gets positive feedback, this time shattering Reece’s self-esteem.
The ending of the movie
The relationship with Helen is getting closer and closer, until the two kiss. Adam, however, is done with women and, above all, must face his demons. In particular, the past comes back to look for him. It’s about the minions of a drug dealer from Paris to whom the chef owes a large sum of money. After several warnings, they decide to settle the bill by beating him up.
In the evening of the same day the Michelin inspectors show up at the restaurant. Everything seems to go smoothly, until Michel decides to ruin a sauce to take revenge for the tripping he suffered years earlier. Adam’s sacrifices shatter and, overwhelmed by negative emotions, gets drunk and attempts to commit suicide. To save him is Reece, his archenemy.
Despite the rivalry that has always pitted them against each other, these he orders him not to do crazy things, because he is the best in the square and his brigade needs him. And maybe, for the first time, Adam understands that relying only on your own isn’t enough to achieve success and that you need to learn to trust those around you.
