In addition, as part of the celebrations, the photographic exhibition will be inaugurated Experience the Buenos Aires Subway. 110 years in images (1913-2023), in the station lobby Law School.
In 1909 the National Congress sanctioned Law 6,700, which authorized the Western Railway to extend underground to the port of Buenos Aires – which was its main intention -, while the Municipality issued an ordinance that allowed the Anglo-Argentina Tram Company build and operate a subway network that, in a first stage, would link Plaza de Mayo with Primera Junta.
This first line of the Buenos Aires network was the only one excavated entirely in the open, breaking up the streets to dig deep ditches that would later be roofed. The first well began to be dug on September 15, 1911. 1,500 men worked on the work and, with the help of steam engines, removed 440,000 cubic meters of earth that were later used to fill in the low areas surrounding the Flores Cemetery and the Vélez Sarsfield Avenue.
The double-track tunnel, more than seven kilometers long, also required 31 million bricks, 108,000 170 kg barrels of cement, 13,000 tons of iron ties and 90,000 square meters of insulating layer. Today aesthetic details remain in the stations, such as, for example, the use of different colors of tiles for the guards of each station, so that those who did not know how to read could easily locate their destination. Finally, La Brugeoise cars inaugurated the Line A service (where they operated for almost 100 years) on December 1, 1913, linking Plaza de Mayo with Plaza Miserere.
