The story of Maila Nurmi

Maila Nurmi created the cult character Vampira.

A woman dressed in black walks towards the camera in the fog and screams loudly at the spine.

– Screaming relaxes me so much, the woman says.

The woman has an hourglass body and the character she portrays was known as a Vampire, still known. Maila Nurmen The vampire is one of Hollywood’s cult characters, a model of the Goths that was rediscovered in the 80s. Many even consider the word Vampira, coined by Maila, a generic term for a female vampire.

Who then was this Maila Nurmi, who starred in The Vampira Show on television, in the world’s worst-known film Plan 9 from Outer Spacewho made a child Orson Wellesin with and even accused James Deanin from death.

Maila Nurmi’s niece Sandra Niemi wrote the story of her aunt for as many as 12 years. His book, published last year in English and now translated into Finnish Vampira – Maila Nurmi’s Road to Hollywood (Like) is largely based on notes and notes found in Maila’s home.

– If I hadn’t written this book, Maila Nurmi would have been just a small mention in the history of horror entertainment, Sandra tells Iltalehti by phone.

Sandra seems to be proud of her Finnish roots.

– Isontalo Antti and Rannanjärvi, Sandra rallies right at the beginning of the call. He says it like us Finns.

Sandra talks a lot about Maila, which she admired as a child.

– I was outright obsessed with getting to know her better, she was my aunt. She was a beautiful woman, and I wanted to know everything about her, from her favorite color.

Sandra and Maila had met Sandra as a child. As adults, they met once when Sandra visited her aunt in Los Angeles with her daughter.

– The racket sat on the porch in front of the house with its neighbor. She wore a long-sleeved black sweater even though it was August at the time. I never asked why he had such a warm garment.

Maila invited Sandra and her daughter inside her apartment. The apartment was a garage with no even a single bed. The chairs were plastic garden furniture, the only decent piece of furniture was the sofa.

– The club did not usually invite anyone to their home. But for me and my daughter, he made an exception. He had really put a lot of effort into decorating.

Sandra describes Rapa as incredibly friendly and hospitable. The relatives talked about everything possible, but they didn’t talk about the Vampira.

The racket’s home was also inhabited by a poodle that had been saved by the animal-loving Maila.

– Its name was Stinky. It rumbled along the walls, Sandra laughs.

Child with Orson Welles

Maila Nurmi was born Maila Niemi in Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA in 1922. Maila had more than a year’s older brother, Bobbie, Sandra’s father. Raja’s father was Finnish journalist and sobriety companion Onni and mother Sophie, who dared to defy her husband and who tasted alcohol.

The marriage would take place several times, as Onni traveled to Finland for a long time and Sophie drank.

Racket went to school and found his passion for clothes and sewing. Her mother was happy to think that someone would get a sewing wife from Maila.

Later, as an adult, Maila used her skills and designed the clothes for the Vampira character herself.

Racket knew early on what he wanted and most of all what he didn’t want. She did not want the life expected of women at that time, that is, children and husband. Instead, he wanted to have fun and spend time with creative people.

Maila worked for a while in the family’s hometown of Astoria but she headed to Los Angeles and came up with a new background for herself.

Maila claimed to have been born in Finnish Lapland and to be Paavo Nurmen niece.

Already in his youth, Raja admired the director and actor Orson Welles and its radio production. Later, they met in the nightlife and started a relationship. The relationship gave birth to a child who was taken away from Maila. The racket was only 20 at the time.

The racket also worked as a model to make itself known and make money. Glamor Models

The child became a successful lawyer, and it was only as an adult that he heard that he was the son of Maila Nurmi.

– My spouse calls me a bloodthirsty lawyer today, he didn’t before, a Vermont resident and retired David Putter velmu last year in an interview with Wcax TV.

Sandra has not yet met her cousin, as she was only found a year ago by DNA tests.

– See you in August! He invited me and my daughter to a village in Vermont. And you know what, David was studying at the same university Joe Biden with. They played on the same football team.

The racket was momentarily popular in the United States, but for most of his life he lived poor.

Vigil

Life could hold parties with Hollywood stars, genuine friendships and death, some of which Maila may never have recovered from. The club’s best friend was James Dean. Maila, James Dean and Jack Simmons together formed the Night Watch Troika, which, among other things, toured the cemeteries.

After Dean died in a car accident in 1955, Maila received charges, as incomprehensible as it sounds, about the death of a friend.

Whisper Magazine claimed Maila was likely to cast a curse of black magic on Dean, which caused Dean to die.

After the article was published, hardly anyone wanted to hire Maila anymore.

The cover of this Whisper magazine is said to have ruined Maila’s career. Whisper

The vampire character was as important to Mail as the child was, as Sandra describes it.

In the 1980s, Maila fought a bitter lawsuit against entertainment artist Elvira, who was accused of stealing his Vampira character.

Although Rapa’s career was short, the Vampira character is still remembered.

– The Goths in particular consider the Vampire their role model. And you know what. I heard that Rapa’s grave is the most popular grave in the cemetery. The racket was a Hollywood legend, just as the tombstone reads.

And what would Maila like about the book written about him?

– Of course he would have criticized it and said that it didn’t go that way and that and that went like that. But deep down he would have been taken.
