After a more stable Halloween night, Ciarán, a high-impact stormwill leave in the next few hours a strong storm with rain, the first snowfall important in the mountains, gusts of wind up to 110km/h maritime storm, which will activate the red alert on the Galician coast. In Catalonia, Civil Protection has activated a double alert due to the gusts of wind and the maritime storm.
Starting this Thursday, “the worst” of this storm will arrive, which, coming from the United Kingdom, will deepen in a very short time due to a process of explosive cyclogenesis in its formation, impacting strongly in Galicia where there is a red warning (extreme risk), by waves of 8 to 9 meters and winds from the west or northwest of 75 to 87 km/h (force 9).
Hard weather
According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), on Thursday a “harsh maritime storm“, especially on the coast of Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea, although will also affect the Mediterranean where the waves could reach 5 meters.
During that day, the “most relevant” phenomenon will be strong wind of a western component, with very strong gusts (over 70 km/h) quite generally, reaching 90 km/h in large areas of the north, interior of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and may even exceed 100 km/h in areas high and in points of the Cantabrian coast and areas of the east and southeast of the peninsula.
The fronts will enter through the northwest of the peninsula, with locally heavy rains and occasionally accompanied by storms in Galicia, the Cantabrian area and the Pyrenees, which will spread to the rest of the country and the Balearic Islands, although with less intensity towards the south and the Mediterranean area, and without affecting the southeast of the peninsula.
Snow level rises
With the entry of a colder air mass, temperatures will drop and with it the snow level, “significantly”, standing between 1,200 and 1,400 meters in the northern half of the peninsula, so in the mountain systems produce, although not important, the first snowfalls of the season.
On Friday, practically the entire country will continue under the influence of Ciarán with atmospheric unstable and showersmore dispersed and less intense than the previous day, although they will continue to be strong and with storms and hail in the north, especially on the Cantabrian coast.
The snow level will rise throughout the day and the strong wind will persist at first, but “clearly less intense” than the previous day in the southwest and center of the peninsula where the gusts will no longer be very strong; The poor state of the sea will also continue, especially on the Cantabrian coast, although with a tendency to improve throughout the day.

Starting this weekend, it is very likely that a new storm with characteristics similar to Ciarán, with its associated fronts, will once again impact the country with similar effects.
The Aemet details that the uncertainty of the prediction is not high, so it is quite likely that during next Sunday night the new storm will move away towards the North Sea, gradually improving the conditions of precipitation, wind and sea, ending so the episode.
