‘The Snow Society’ passes the first screening in the Oscar race in four categories

The latest film by the Barcelona filmmaker JA Bayona‘The Snow Society’, has been preselected by the Hollywood Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to compete for the Oscar in four categories, a milestone that no Spanish director had achieved to date. The Bayona film, which recreates the plane crash that a Uruguayan plane suffered in the Andes mountain range in 1972, has made a place for itself on the lists of pre-candidates in the sections of best international film, best original music (work of the American Michael Giacchino), best visual effects and best makeup and hair.

The Hollywood Academy has made public for the moment the so-called ‘shortlists’ of shortlists in 10 categories, so ‘The Snow Society’ could still rear its head among the nominees in some other section (the awards are left out of the announcement considered major, such as direction, acting, scriptwriting and photography, among others).

The final list of Oscar nominees will be announced next January 23. Academics will vote between February 12 and 27, and on March 10 the Academy Awards will take place in the traditional location of the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, in a gala hosted (for the fourth time) by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
