‘The sneakiest thing I’ve ever done is take a fish out of the pond’

Luc da Fonseca CostaStatue Adriaan van der Ploeg

Where and with whom do you live?

‘In Amsterdam, with mom Liselot (47), dad Pedro (53), my brothers Luca (19) and Mika (19) and our dog Lizzie (1).

What do you prefer to do?

‘Playing outside with my friends and collecting insects. Yesterday I brought snails from outside, because I think they are sweet critters. I have yet to come up with their names. Last year I brought a beetle and later I want a snake as a pet. They are also very sweet. I’ve never had one around my neck, but I want one.’

What’s the craziest animal you’ve ever brought home?

‘When I was on holiday in Callantsoog, I saw a seahorse lying on the beach. While it was in my hand, it suddenly started to move. I threw it back into the water, but it didn’t swim away. That’s why I decided to take it with me. At home we put the seahorse in a pot of water. Suddenly it started swimming! We gave it to the aquarium, because their seahorse needed another mate.’

Do you resemble your parents?

‘Pretty good, because I’m very stubborn just like Dad. He’s even more stubborn than I am. Mom and Dad are both bad at math. I’m not very good at that either.’

Do you play an instrument?

‘Piano! But I’ve only just started, so I’m not very good at it yet. Now I can only Father Jacob play and a piece of Fur Elise† In my lesson book there is explanation about nuts. I can read it better and better.’

Do you ever do something secretly?

‘When my brothers are not at home, I secretly play on the Playstation. Then I put on the headphones and hear their friends talking. The sneakiest thing I’ve ever done is take a fish from the pond at the zoo. At first I thought there was a tadpole in the pond and I really wanted it. I scooped the fish out of the water with my water bottle and put the bottle under my vest. When I got home, Mom wasn’t too happy about it at first. Kikkie, that is the name of my fish, turned out to be a small tropical fish. Well, I’m happy with it.’

What will your life look like in ten years?

‘Later I will become a zookeeper or veterinarian, because I prefer to help sick animals. It’s fun taking care of our dog Lizzie. I’ll probably do a study for that, but I don’t know which one yet. Furthermore, it is a surprise what I will be doing in ten years’ time.’
