The Smashing Pumpkins released their new single ‘Beguiled’ on Tuesday (September 20), a prelude to what Billy Corgan has dubbed a ‘rock opera in three acts’: ATUM (pronounced ‘autumn’). The final release date is said to be in April 2023.
ATUM will feature 33 songs and will be the official follow-up to 1995’s MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS and MACHINA/MACHINES OF GOD (2000). The tracks will be released in stages: each eleven-song act will be released every eleven weeks on digital streaming platforms, as well as a new Corgan podcast series, “Thirty-Three with William Patrick Corgan” (Guest on Episode 1: Mike Garson). Act 1 will be released on November 15th, Act 2 on January 31st, 2023, Act 3 on April 21st, 2023 – along with a special edition box set containing all 33 album tracks and 10 additional unreleased songs. This week, Billy Corgan introduces the tracks “Atum” and “Butterfly Suite” on the podcast.
Here you can listen to the new single “Beguiled” in the stream, a corresponding video should be released on Tuesday evening:
The current album by the Smashing Pumpkins CYR was released in 2020. ME author Arno Frank wrote about it: “CYR is the first (drum roll!) double album since MELON COLLIE and so on, but it’s just a collection of rather small rolls. Modernization that comes along as a historicization that, in turn, has long been outdated. The only thing that remains constant are the world-shattering lyrics and Corgan’s pleasantly moaning voice, but also the suspicion that his songwriting suits the baroque robe better than the skin-tight glittery costume.”
