Recommendations of the Editorial team

“The Simpsons” have been running on US television continuously for over three decades-and there is still no end in sight. As has now become known, the US broadcaster Fox has extended the long-lasting animation series by four more seasons.

This makes it official: “The Simpsons” will continue until the 2028/29 season, exactly until the year in which the format celebrates its 40th anniversary.

However, there is also a small innovation. In the future, the number of episodes will be reduced per season. As producer and author Matt Selman reveals to the “Variety” industry magazine, only 17 episodes of the “Simpsons” per season should appear from now on. Of these, 15 episodes are intended for FOX, while two are published exclusively on Disney+.

The reason for this decision is obviously in the increasing production effort and in changing visual habits of the audience.

The very first season only counted 13 episodes. In the 1990s, up to 25 episodes per season were not uncommon. Later, the number settled at around 22. In season 35, the number of episodes was reduced to 18 due to the author strike.

“The Simpsons” continues to be successful

Despite its long term, the series remains relevant and successful. For example, episode 11 of the current season reached, titled “Bottle Episode”, around three million viewers in the United States: inside. In addition to legendary guest appearances, a cinema film and massive merchandise, “The Simpsons” remains a real pop culture phenomenon.

Season 36 ended in May 2025, the next one is expected in autumn. In Germany the series runs on Disney+, repetitions are available from ProSieben and Sky.
