Eminem and Mariah Carey – in the past it crashed more often between the two musicians. Now there is another strange detail. According to the Damion “Damizza” Young, a former producer of Carey, Eminem actually offered her the role of his mother in “8 Mile” (2002). The film shows Eminem’s climb to the rapper on the screen. But why Mariah Carey, although she is only four years older than him?
Eminem wanted to cast Mariah Carey as his mother
Damizza, who worked with Mariah Carey on “I Still Believe”, among other things in the “TFU Podcast” that he actually wanted to keep Carey from making the film “Glitter” (2001) by playing the main role of a rising singer. In the meantime, he received a call from Eminem’s team with the proposal to organize a meeting between Eminem and Mariah Carey.
“They said he had this film called” 8 Mile “and wanted them to play in it,” said Damizza via “Consequence”. At first Carey was skeptical and little interested. Only when it became clear that it was about a serious film role that she asked Eminem’s telephone number.
Eminem: “I really want her in the film”
Damizza described how he called Eminem and urged him not to treat Mariah like Christina Aguilera, with whom there had been reports of tensions and conflicts more often in the past. Eminem is said to have answered: “I really want to have her in the film.”
At a subsequent phone call, the bizarre then came: Eminem wanted Carey to play his mother. Carey was apparently anything but enthusiastic about this proposal. “She didn’t like that at all. Her uncertainties came to light,” said Damizza in the podcast. Ultimately, Kim Basinger took on the role of the mother in the film – which is at least 19 years older than Eminem.
The dispute over an alleged relationship
For a long time there were rumors about a relationship between Eminem and Mariah Carey, which she always contested. Damizza claimed in the “TFU Podcast” that Mariah was the one who found Eminem interesting. In 2002 she said in an interview with Larry King, according to “Consquence”: “I met him and talked on the phone, maybe four times. But I don’t call that dating.” In contrast, Eminem publicly addressed her alleged relationship.
This later led to a public exchange of blows in the form of disstracks: In 2009 Carey released her song “Obsessed” with a video in which she took Eminem on the shovel. Eminem countered in the same year with the track “The Warning”, which officially ended the dispute.
Eminem and 50 cents announced in 2023 that they wanted to implement “8 Mile” as a series a good 20 years after his theatrical release. So far, however, there is no further information on the content or the start of production.
