The Shakespeare Theater is a party every year for the entire Wijers family

A premiere is always a party, but especially for the Wijers family. Because all five family members are involved in the Shakespeare Theater in Diever.

Last night it was smashing Antony and Cleopatra premiere. It is the first time in more than 75 years that the play will be performed. Director Jack Nieborg wrote a completely new, up-to-date translation.

It is a tragedy that humorously treats the scandalous affair between the Roman general Mark Antony and the capricious Egyptian queen Cleopatra. Antony’s authority increasingly suffers from their passion where ambition, love and disaster will eventually lead to their downfall.

Daughter Inge Wijers (27) plays one of the main roles: Cleopatra. “I once started here with the youth. I then made friends who participated in the summer production, after which I also signed up. Gradually my parents found out that it is very nice here. This is how the whole family eventually became involved.”

Father Bert Wijers (58) plays Lepidus, one of the rulers of the Roman Empire. “I am very proud to have two daughters on stage. I was already playing theater before I joined the Shakespeare Theater. My daughter Inge then said: come on, join in! I enjoyed it so much that I thought: I should also be on that scene,” said Bert.
