British reporter Louis Theroux finds out in the BBC’s two-parter Theroux and those convicted without charge program to convicted criminals who have ended up in the Ohio psychiatric prison hospital in the USA instead of prison.
Summit Psychiatric Hospital in Cincinnati is now allowing cameras in its facilities for the first time in 60 years.
There are long-term patients who have committed serious crimes in the institution, who have been ordered to compulsory treatment instead of punishment. One of the patients is Jonathan, who has been in the hospital for two years. Seven years have passed since his crime.
At the time of the crime, the man was 32 years old. He killed his own father.
– A couple of years before I killed my father, I had developed delusions according to which he was to blame for my bad mood, i.e. my depression, Jonathan says on TV why he grabbed the knife.
– I told him that here is my sexual abuse for you 20 years ago, man, what he said at the time of the act.
– Father denied it when I was about to kill him.

Jonathan’s father was a popular small-town history teacher. Bloodwork horrified the community with its brutality.
In an interview with Theroux, Jonathan believes he loved his father. However, he no longer believes that he has committed anything wrong.
– I no longer believe that my father beat or abused me.
According to the program, Jonathan’s thoughts are distorted and information processing is different from that of a so-called normal person. However, thanks to the medication, the symptoms remain under control, and Jonathan is slowly getting more freedom. He is looking forward to having lunch with his mother.
