The transport ministry has tendered the drafting of the project for add a fourth lane on the AP-7 between Martorell and Vilafranca del Penedès, both in Barcelona. It’s about a first step to expand the capacity of this roadwhich is estimated to require an investment of 140 million euros.
In a statement, the Ministry recalled that On August 31, the concession ended of tolls on this motorway and points out that since then work has been going on “to adapt the motorways to the new reality”.
“The studies carried out prior to the release of the motorway already anticipated a significant increase in traffic and the need to launch actions, among others, the one that is now being tendered and to which others will be added soon, all of them agreed upon with the territory”, adds the central Executive.
Specific location
The section covered between Martorell and Vilafranca Centerin which it is planned to add this fourth lane, occupies 23 kilometers of highway.

In April, the General Secretary of Government Infrastructures, Xavier Flores, already announced that the AP-7 will have a fourth lane between El Vendrell (Tarragona) and El Papiol (Barcelona), a stretch of about 50 kilometers of road -in which the aforementioned 23 kilometers are included- in whose expansion a total of about 200 million euros will be invested.
The section in question is one of the black spots of the highway, which concentrates multiple traffic accidents throughout the highway.
