In addition to the best game, Skábma also took home the prize for the best art.

– Our whole team has sweated the whole thing. We have worked hard to create the best possible game. The art group has also been excited about the recognition they have received.

Sámi became known through games

The game is spoken in the Northern Sami language. Skábma is inspired by Sámi folk tales. Behind the idea is the writer of Red Stage, a Sámi Marjaana Auranen.

– It feels like I won something and that feels good. After all, this is a big hat-trick for Sámi culture and our team. I am very grateful and taken by this, Auranen sighs.

Auranen states that the victory brings light to the gloomy Sámi news. In Sámi, the news has been well received and the victory was happy.

– It’s nice that we are also recognized as a game and not just because of the culture.

Auranen regrets how little is taught about native cultures or minorities. According to hopes, the game would bring familiarity to the indigenous people.

– I would assume that with this recognition, people would get to know the game and the culture.

Low budget game

Sahin says that Skábma was made on a small budget. It is hoped that the win will bring more visibility to the game.

– We’ve had trouble getting people to know about us. Yes, this will spread the word somewhat, says Sahin.

Larger gambling houses may spend hundreds of thousands or even millions on their marketing. Skábma’s marketing budget has been a small fraction of this.

At the Finnish Game Awards game gala organized in Finland, Skábma was recognized as the creative performance of the year. The company’s representatives did not know that they were nominated in that category at the time.

The game is currently available for PC on Steam, Epic Store and GOG services. The release is also coming for Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
