The vineyard’s annual rosé wine competition is over. Vine Leaf Rose Wine of the Year 2022 was selected from 113 nominees.
The popularity and appreciation of rosé wines is still growing, and rosé is no longer considered just a product between white and red wines.
According to vineyard experts, roses are at their best at a young age, and their fineness is often based on fresh berry or fruity freshness. Very few roses improve when stored.
Vine Leaf Rose Wine of the Year 2022
Torres Digno Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé 2020, Chile (€ 11.99)
Jury rating: The aroma is open, full-bodied, purely fresh and ripe berry. It contains currant, cherry, raspberry, gooseberry and a little herbiness. The dry but very berry taste accurately reproduces the aromas. The spice can be distinguished by spicy herbs, delicate citrus and aromas of red apple. The noticeable acidity brings posture to the taste and carries the whole with a currant, water-lifting after-effect.
Food recommendation: A multi-purpose dining rose for buffet and lunch trips. Excellent with light meat and full salads.
Price-quality: Good price-quality
Silver was awarded to:
Saint Clair Vicar’s Choice Sauvignon Blanc Rosé Bright Light 2021, New Zealand (€ 14.98)
And bronze:
Pink Riesling Weinhof 519, Germany (€ 13.29)
This is how the winning wine was chosen
For the selection of rose wine of the year in the vineyard Juha Berglund and Antti Rinta-Huumo tasted blindly 113 rosé wines that had been entered in the competition by importers. The wines were allowed to come from a standard and order selection. The wines were tasted and evaluated as objectively as possible in several pre-qualification scans, on the basis of which the tastiest candidates for the final competition were selected.
Jury comment on the competition:
– The wines entered in the rosé wine competition can be roughly divided into three categories. The first includes intensely aromatic, bountifully fresh and perky roses. Another is represented by Provence-type, wide, spicy and warm-hearted wines. Representatives of the third genus are rapeseed, so-called Riesling roses.
– The winning wine is a great Chilean food rose: nuanced berry, upright, herbal and crunchy. The wine has also grabbed two wins from our previous competitions.
– The silver medalist is a New Zealand blended wine from Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec. The mineral, lush and aromatic wine goes well with aromatic, summery dishes.
– The bronze wine was a fun surprise, as it was revealed as the same rose that placed third in our competition last year. A German wine made from Riesling and Pinot Noir also includes a drop of water. The product thus complies with the provisions of the Wine Act, but is treated in Europe as a mixed drink.
