The Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships coin dedicated to Mennea has been presented

Lots of sport today at the Ministry of Economy and Finance on the occasion of the presentation of the 2024 Numismatic Collection, in the presence, among others, of the Minister of Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti, the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, the president of Fidal and the EuroRoma 2024 Foundation Stefano Mei, the president and CEO of the State Printing and Mint Institute, Paolo Perrone and Francesco Soro, with Mara Venier godmother of the event, and Manuela Olivieri, Mennea’s wife, as guest of honour.

The celebratory silver coin has a value of 10 euros and has the elliptical shape of an athletics track. On the reverse side of the coin the legendary Italian sprinter was depicted, with the bib number 433, which he wore when he won the gold medal in the 200 meters race at the 1980 Moscow Games, and the shorts with the number 8, to indicate the lane in which he achieved that extraordinary result. The coin also features the time of 19″72 with which Mennea ran the 200 meters in Mexico City in 1979, setting a world record that stood for almost 17 years and has never been surpassed at a European level. On the obverse side of the coin, an athletics track and the official logo of the Rome 2024 European Athletics Championships are depicted, which will take place at the Olympic Stadium and the Foro Italico Park from 7 to 12 June.
