The road of silencea success in Greece
The road of silence, of Greek production (Filmiki Etairia), distributed by Beta Film, was a success of ratings and criticism at home. Channel 5 airs it, on first run, for four Wednesdays in a row until 3 August (each episode consists of three episodes, except the last one, in which four will be seen).
To sign this series are Petros Kalkovalis and Melina Tsampani, leading authors in Greece. Present in the cast very popular actors at home (for example Penelope Tsilika, who plays the protagonist, the journalist Thalea).
The road of silence: what happened in the first episode
The tranquility of one small community in Western Attica was shocked by the disappearance of a school bus carrying nine elementary school children, the driver and a helper. The anguish of the families is enormous, the attention of the authorities and the media very high because the missing children are all children of some of the most important families in the areabetween them also the son of the mayor Niketas (Giannos Perlegas).
Among the missing is also Aristea, daughter of Athena (Anthi Efstratiadou), sister of the journalist Thalea (Penelope Tsilika). The investigations are officially conducted by Nasos Economidis (Dimitris Lalos) and follow the trail kidnapping for ransom. The criminals, in fact, for the liberation of the children, come to ask one hundred million euros. The detail is that the ransom demand is made to the journalist Thalea and not to the police.
The road of silence: previews of what we will experience tonight
The three episodes airing tonight are called The ransom, The sins of the fathers and The road of silence.
The starting point is that, four days after the kidnapping, the wait is exhausting, the parents would like to pay the ransom, perhaps asking to lower the amount. But the police are hesitating, he sensed that there is much more behind the kidnapping, but he still doesn’t understand what.
The head of the investigation Nasos knows the dynamics of a kidnapping, he must be able to prevent individual families from taking personal initiatives to save their children. But Spyros (Antonis Kafetzopoulos), father of the journalist Thalea and Athena, mother of two kidnapped children, not trusting the police, he still goes to a private detective office.
From thriller to psychological drama
However, the police are starting to rummage through the lives of the families involved. And, digging, digging, it turns out an old case of bullying that the school tried to cover up. The family of the journalist Thalea is involved, in particular her brother Orpheuswho is interrogated and detained by the police, and his father Spyros. The details that emerge about the relationship between father and son are surprising.
The reporter Thalea
At the same time, it takes on an important role of its own Thalea, who is in contact with one of the kidnappers, Michalis Topalis (Nikolas Papagiannis), without however knowing that he is the kidnapper. In the development of the affair, she is the one who takes the reins of the negotiations, collaborating, side by side, with the head of the investigation Nasos. In the long run though Nasos’ superiors don’t like this situation. And when it happens a savage murder which upsets the already upset local community, the blame is mainly attributed to the police: Twenty-three days have passed since the kidnapping and no conclusions have yet been reached. The superiors of Nasos they demand that Thalea be cut off from the negotiations. But his relationship with Nasos is now too close, they both understand that they need each other.
Disruption among the kidnappers
The fibrillation increases because there is also turmoil on the front of the kidnappers: a child, Savas, manages to remove the grate of a ventilation duct, Aristea volunteers to try to escape. The kidnappers realize that something is wrong. Chaos breaks out. A scuffle arises e Savas is shot.
Michalis’ accomplices feel the weight of tension, they too have a superior, “the orchestrator”, from which they demand clarification. The risk, they fear, is that the more time you spend without agreeing on the ransom, the more chances of getting caught increase.
“The orchestrator” thus begins to show his cards and for the first time the investigators take a positive step: identify one of the authors.
Athena’s double life
During the episode another important front opens up: that of the double life of Athena, sister of the journalist Thalea, divided between her husband Vassilis (Christos Loulis) with which relationships become increasingly tense, and Aristea’s biological father. Athena’s secrets are destined to soon become public and it will create a lot of havoc.
