Rimowa launches a design award of the same name. The “Rimowa Design Prize” is intended to celebrate German design heritage and inspire young students, the suitcase specialist announced on Thursday.
The first edition of the competition is dedicated to the topic of “mobility”. Students from selected German design universities have the opportunity to freely interpret the topic and to put the theory they have learned in their studies into practice. However, they should incorporate the “global impact of mobility” and three of Rimowa’s principles, “Resilience, Excellence and Quality” into their designs, the statement said. The competition runs for several months and ends in April 2023.
“Tradition, craftsmanship and design are core values of Rimowa, and it is becoming increasingly important for us to support and promote the next generation of German design,” says Hugues Bonnet-Masimbert, the managing director of the German suitcase specialist, about the introduction of the award.
The winners of the “Rimowa Design Prize” are chosen by a renowned jury, including Alexandre Arnault, CEO of Rimowa and the director of the Vitra Design Museum, Mateo Kries. Each jury member will mentor participants who have progressed to the second round of the competition to bring their designs to fruition.
In total, the “Rimowa Design Prize” will select five finalists. First place comes with prize money of 20,000 euros. Second place will receive 10,000 euros, while third, fourth and fifth place winners will each receive 5,000 euros.
