At 79 years old Hugo Moyano You still have to strive to stay current. After the setbacks at Independiente, some major health problems and a pandemic where he took extreme care at the request of his wife, the union leader could imagine himself retired from his activity. But Pablo’s driving is not convincing: “Pablo is not Hugo”, say those who frequent both to explain why the historic trade unionist returned to activity. In an election year, he couldn’t afford to take a break.
For this reason, Hugo resumed meetings with different union sectors to strengthen the Peronist armed forces, beyond the work that Pablo does close to Kirchnerism. It is that the Moyano family cannot let Together for Change return to power: “Yes Macri He wins, he is going to put us in jail,” he warned a few months ago. He plays all or nothing.
Diary. At the beginning of February, Hugo took center stage at the meeting of the 62 organizations, the historical union arm of Peronism. The trucker leader was accompanied by Facundo with the aim of beginning to rearm power in the run-up to the national elections. Other important guilds also participated in the successive meetings that it has been holding, such as Energy, centered in Catheda; gas; service stations; state and cemetery employees, among others.
The readings of the photos, where Moyano always appears in the center of the scene, are several: they want to influence the assembly of the PJ lists when the places are distributed, but it also works as an alert signal to “the fat ones” in space of Luis Barrionuevo and company. The Government has already taken note of this new power factor that is beginning to emerge.
But above all things, it is an alternative to the sector headed by his son Pablo, much more in favor of Kirchnerism and with less bargaining power. It is that the assistant secretary of Truckers is not in vain known as “the Savage”. He inspires more fear than respect. He inherited from Hugo the combative part, capable of blocking a factory until breaking an agreement in his favor, but unable to negotiate otherwise.
In fact, after moving away from his father with the union alignments he decided to surround himself with, closer to orthodox Kirchnerism, he ended up generating distrust even from the CGT, of which he is co-owner. Missing wrist.
That is why Hugo began to generate a more oiled bond with the rest of his children. He leans on Facundo, on the lawyer “Huguito Junior” and on the youngest, Jerónimo, who today is the secretary of the Youth of Truckers. Always accompanied by one of them, he reconstructs his agenda with the other unions.
For the trade unionists who received Moyano in recent weeks, his return is also a sign of humility. Hugo understands that the days in which he did and undid at ease, without consulting, are over. He now needs others and he knows it.
Disputes. On December 14, Moyano met for the last time with Alberto Fernández, just a couple of days after Cristina resigned from the 2023 candidacy. The union leader was already beginning to show his concern about the creation of lists, despite the fact that the The President pointed out that the meeting had been to “ratify the Government’s vocation to continue creating registered employment.”
For Hugo, the result of the presidential elections is not minor. He knows that there is no return from the criticisms he made of former President Macri: he described him as “disordered” and “brainless.” “The Argentine people cannot make mistakes again,” he said in an interview on Radio 10 at the end of last year. And he added: “If this happens, it will be a problem for the workers because they want to take away all their rights.”
There is indeed a point in common with Pablo, who has been demanding that the Government mitigate the internships and debate their differences behind closed doors so as not to fail at the polls. “We are rotten from the fights, this is a swap,” he protested last week. “No one leads us and if we continue like this we give the recalcitrant right a chance to return,” he added.
The other weighty dispute for Moyano is the one he has with “the fat ones” and “the independents”. Barrionuevo is joined by Hector Daer and Carlos Acuna, who on October 17 relaunched their space to unite forces for these elections. Hugo works in a place from which to make a strong counterweight to them.
Without being able to count on Pablo and a month after turning 79, the historic leader of Truckers rearms his space of power. Of course, far from the omnipresence of other times where his word was law.
