The recommended ones of BAFICI 2023

On Wednesday, April 19, a new edition of the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI) which will run until May 1 and its programming includes more than 250 films of different nationalities. The opening will be with the short film “Continuum – The beach” of the tucumana Mariana Bomba and the feature film “Last Resort” by Matías Szulanski.

The festival will take place in a main circuit in the Avenida Corrientes area and the rooms that will have BAFICI programming and activities are: The Cultural San Martín, Cine Monumental Lavalle Multiplex, Cine Lorca, Cine Gaumont (INCAA), Alianza Francesa, Sala Leopoldo Lugones, Cine Cosmos and Arthaus. In addition, it will once again feature BAFICITO, the section dedicated to children’s cinema.

Among the numerous films that the twenty-fourth edition of the film festival will offer, several debut films, films by renowned directors, and retrospectives of Rajat Kappor, Norberto Ramos del Val and Clement Cogitore. In the closing function the short film will be screened “Angel and Pearl” by Jenni Merla and Denise Anzarut and the Spanish film “I am a good person” by Norberto Ramos del Val.

Among the films in the national and international competitions, several stand out for their imprint and independent styling, and others for their themes. In this sense, the contest is competitive and has several official and unofficial awards, which will be chosen by a jury of notables from the cinematographic environment.

“Clorindo Testa” Dir. Mariano Llinás – National Competition

The new film from the director of “The flower” is a personal and experimental approach to the figure of the great ClorindoTesta. A documentary based on experimentation, observation and reflection that Llinas has been developing in particular films such as “Spas” and “Concert for the battle of El Tala”

“Is this film about Clorindo Testa or not? And, if not, what is it about? Among these threats and others even worse, navigates this small, microscopic adventure whose subtitle, stolen from the Savoyard Xavier de Maistre, could well be Voyage autour de mon pere”

“Blondi” Dir. Dolores Fonzi – International Competition

The debut of Dolores Fonzi, in which he also stands out as the protagonist of the film, he tells the story of mother and son. The tape was written by Fonzi along with Laura Wallsgroup member “The skin of lava. The duo of actresses, referents of Argentine independent cinema, ventured into the field of film script with a forceful result.

“Blondi and Mirko live together, listen to the same music, watch the same movies, like to smoke weed, go to concerts and have the same friends… But even though they look almost the same age, Blondi is Mirko’s mother.”

“The Vega Clan” Dir. José Celestino Campusano – National Competition

Director of “Mud”, “Viking” and “Hard-skinned Men” He is recognized for his rawness and his qualities in the narration. Jose campusano, one of the main directors of national cinema, addresses the singularities of real people, complementing himself by abstaining from all visual artifice. An authorial seal called “gross cinema” and that is the name of his own production company.

“Story based on the criminal path of a fearsome nomadic family. Inspired by true facts, it portrays the vulnerability of people in the face of the ineffectiveness of State institutions.”

“The Others” Dir. Alexandra Hyland – International Competition

The Chilean film addresses one of the most latent conflicts in the neighboring country’s society: abortion. The debut feature narrates, from a feminine perspective and a feminist focus, the social problem, taken in the field of fiction, but within a real context.

“Rafaela and Gabriela are best friends. Rafa’s unexpected pregnancy threatens the pink and extravagant oasis they have built. Abortion in Chile is illegal but not impossible, and together they must face the hostility of the system to achieve it.”

“Boy” Dir. Nacho Sesma, Nicolás Goldschmidt – National Competition

The film addresses male sex work outside of stereotypes and emphasizes the portrayal of dissidence. An acid and dark feature film that refers us to the independent debut of Anahi Berneri, made by Juan Minujin, “A year without love”.

“Set in the cosmopolitan city of Buenos Aires, and inspired by true stories of male sex workers, Boy accompanies Franco for one night, an escort with an extraordinary life.”
