It was THE (surprise) hit on Netflix in autumn 2020 and suddenly made playing chess fashionable again worldwide. We are of course talking about the series “The Queen’s Gambit”. This is based on the novel of the same name by Walter Trevis and tells the story of chess genius Beth Harmon, who asserts herself as one of the few women in a male-dominated sport. Actually, the story of the novel is told in the seven episodes of the first season – actually. Because yesterday, a tweet from leading actress Anya Taylor-Joy caused a stir, promising a second season of “The Queen’s Gambit”.
Surprise announcement for The Queen’s Gambit Season 2?
The fact that new series and seasons are announced by the actors is not unusual. Netflix recently announced via video with actress Jenna Ortega that the hit series “Wednesday” is getting a sequel. Accordingly, Anya Taylor-Joy’s tweet could be taken seriously, especially since the actress is now a really well-known face in Hollywood. There wasn’t much in the tweet, just the words “The Queens Gambit 2,” which is the English title of the series.
Accordingly, fans could suddenly hope for a sequel, but not for very long. Shortly thereafter, Taylor-Joy announced via Instagram that her Twitter account had been hacked and that it was therefore a fake.

Their fans also usually find the action rather funny. But many are also a little disappointed and would have liked to see a second season of “The Queen’s Gambit”. So it seems to be a mini-series.

As already mentioned, the Netflix hit is based on the novel “The Queen’s Gambit” by the American author Walter Tevis from 1983. Tevis’ films were filmed before “The Queen’s Gambit” – sometimes very successfully. Well-known are “The Man Who Fell From Heaven” with superstar David Bowie in the leading role or “The Color of Money” with Tom Cruise, Forest Whitaker and Paul Newman. An interesting side fact: The novel was not translated into German until the success of the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit”.
The story is narrated by Elizabeth “Beth” Harmon (played by Anya Taylor-Joy). Beth grew up in an orphanage in Kentucky in the 1950s. Through the caretaker of the home (Bill Camp), she discovers chess for herself and it quickly becomes apparent that she has an enormous talent for it. From now on it’s about the fact that she has to prove herself as a woman in a male domain over and over again. Beth also struggles with her addiction to alcohol and drugs, which she acquired in the orphanage. She always pursues the goal of becoming world champion.
