Netflix has been preparing a change to its subscription models for quite some time, which will make it difficult to share the password. The company’s goal is that one account can only be used within the same household. The background is the tightened market situation for streaming services, which has made Netflix look for new cash flows.
Cnet site in the new order model, the account holder must specify the primary location where the account is used. In this location, the account can be used by all profiles of the user account.
People who live outside this location must be added to the user account as additional members, which also incurs an additional fee. The additional member has his own usernames, but the main user of the account pays the basic fee for the order and the additional fee for the additional member.
Additional members can only play content on one device at a time and store content on only one device. You can also create only one viewer profile.
The price varies by country
Netflix has four different subscription levels in North America: Basic subscription with ads ($6.99/month), Basic ($9.99/month), Standard ($15.49/month) and Premium ($19.99/month month). You can add one additional member to the Standard subscription and two to the Premium subscription. Basic subscriptions do not allow additional members at all.
There are currently three subscription levels in use in Finland: Basic (€7.99/month), Double (€11.99/month) and Family (€15.99/month).
Netflix has not clearly stated the additional price for an additional member. The price also seems to vary by country. On Wednesday, the update came to Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. According to Cnet, in these countries the monthly price of an additional member is on average 43 percent of the monthly payment of the Standard subscription.
Netflix plans to launch its new pricing model globally at the beginning of the year.
How is the restriction implemented?
According to Netflix’s Canadian support site, the account’s primary location is determined by the home wifi network. It is worth noting that the restriction only applies to televisions. Based on this, for example, phones and tablets using the mobile network are not covered by the restriction.
If you don’t specify the location yourself, Netflix automatically determines it based on the IP address, device identifier and account activity. The location is broadly defined based on, for example, city, province or postal code.
The primary location can also be changed afterwards, for example during vacations, so that the account can be used on the television of a hotel or rental apartment.
