The ‘councillor’ of Health, Manel Balcells draws as a lesson that “the health system as a whole must be strengthened”
After three years of pandemic, Catalonia has deactivated the Procicat pre-alert phase due to covid-19. This was announced this Friday by the ‘conseller’ of Health, Manel Balcells. A decision that citizens will not notice but that has a great symbolic charge. “There have been three years of pandemic with various waves that today -for this Friday- we could end and that we are entering a phase of normality,” Balcells said from Vielha.
The ‘councillor’ thanked the citizens for their efforts and, above all, the professionals, “who have dedicated all their abilities and many of them are in a situation of great fatigue”. He has also opined that it is necessary to extract lessons facing future pandemics: “We have to know how to treat our people and the whole of the health system must be strengthened“. In this sense, he has assured that the Government is already working to “place the entire health system where it belongs”.
Balcells has warned that the covid continues to exist, although it is one more disease and that you have to get vaccinated, especially professionals and fragile people.
The Special Plan for Pandemics in Catalonia was activated in the emergency phase on March 12, 2020. This activation of the plan went into the alert phase on November 14, 2021. On May 18, 2022 it was deactivated, leaving the situation of prealert.

The current situation of the pandemic is one of low transmission of the virus, with low healthcare impact with the majority presence of the omicron variant. Hence, other preventive measures are not considered necessary, with the exception of those established for the protection of vulnerable people and which are regulated by state regulations.
Even so, remember that up to 15 people die every day from covid in Spain, the elderly being the most vulnerable group. Likewise, patients with permanent covid still do not have a treatment that cures its sequelae.
