The socialists already denounced last week that the PP launched “the plenary sessions of the Senate at the service of the opposition” of Feijóo

Not even eight days have passed since the PP used his majority in the Senate to disapprove the negotiation of Pedro Sanchez with the independence parties and the conservatives they have already registered a new initiative along the same lines. The words change, but not the substance of the criticism. Thus, with the support of its 143 senators, the popular party will manage to approve another motion against the president of the Government in a next plenary session to put in the Senate’s mouth that the granting of the amnesty to ERC and Junts “seriously harms and damages the dignity of the Spanish as free and equal citizens.”

This Wednesday, the spokesperson for the PP parliamentary group in the Senate, Javier Arenasregistered a new text in which it is stated that “democratic coexistence and the achievement of a just economic and social order” can “never” be achieved through negotiation with political formations led by “people accused and fleeing justice or convicted for acts of extreme gravity against the constitutional order”.

The criticism of the PSOE does not stop there. In the motion they go so far as to denounce a “radical strategic shift“of the socialists when agreeing with nationalist parties to guarantee their “political survival”. They even point to the “decreasing electoral support obtained” by the PSOE, which is completely false, since in the last elections of 23-J they obtained almost a million more votes than in November 2019. However, having an absolute majority, the motion will be approved without difficulties.

Background

This movement by the conservatives is in line with what the president of the Senate himself explained, the popular Pedro Rollanthis Wednesday, when he defended that the Upper House has “some powers” to “seek tickling the Government“. In an interview on Cadena COPE he cited investigative commissions or the delay in the approval process of some laws, such as the hypothetical amnesty law. According to Rollán, the Upper House is facing a “historic opportunity” to “be more relevant” for the Spanish.

For now, last week they managed to promote the motion that disapproved Sánchez for his “negotiation“with the pro-independence parties in order to achieve his investiture. Although it has no legal repercussions, the approval of this text meant that the Senate, as an institution, stressed that it is inadmissible”the political granting of privileges” and that “those responsible for crimes can obtain no favorable treatment guided by exclusively partisan interests.”

This Wednesday, the popular ones went one step further and convened the General Commission of Autonomous Communities so that the regional presidents could debate next week on “the effective application of the principles of equality before the law of all Spaniards, and of solidarity between the Communities”. That is, about the amnesty. The meeting will take place at the same time that Sánchez’s negotiations with the parties are taking place.

The answer

The socialists already denounced last week that the PP launched “the plenary sessions of the Senate at the service of the opposition of Mr. [Alberto Núñez] Feijóo” by promoting the “self-voting” of his motions. In addition, the PSOE spokesperson, Eva Granadossent a letter to Rollán himself demanding his neutrality and requesting that he abandon his partisan attitude.
