We are getting older. After a corona dip, our life expectancy is now rising again. Men are almost 80, women on average 83. What is it like to get older? Does it come with flaws and don’t like it? Or do you fully enjoy your old age full of free time, grandchildren and fun outings?
From figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics It appears that Dutch people who will be 65 in 2028 are expected to live another 21.05 years. That age has risen dramatically in recent years. The life expectancy of 65-year-olds increased from 14.3 years to 20.1 years between 1950 and 2019.
The corona pandemic has caused a decline in the past two years. In both years, about 10 percent more people died than expected. Our life expectancy is now rising again.
Enjoying getting older
For women that is higher than for men. Men now live an average of 79.7 years and women 83 years. The Netherlands has been aging for years and the proportion of older people in the population is increasing. Still, many people don’t mind getting older at all. More than half of the over-55s in the Netherlands say they to enjoy of aging and less than 1 in 10 feel old.
