Did your friend tell you in a private message on social media that you and he have won money? It could be a scam, says the police. The police are warning on Twitter about a new cheating method.
The police remind you that the message you received from a “friend” may have been written by someone else, as your friend’s social media account may have been hijacked.
If you receive such a message on social media, the police advise you to contact your friend and tell them about the message in question. Your friend may not be aware of the messages. The police also remind that online banking credentials or passwords should not be passed on. However, if you accidentally gave your ID to the sender, notify the bank directly and file a criminal complaint.
The police ask to warn especially older people about the scam and to remind them not to hand over their bank credentials to anyone.
In the past, the Cyber Security Center has also warned about Facebook account hacks, where your “friend” can approach you with a message and ask for your phone number.
Finns lost a total of more than 32 million euros to online fraud last year. According to the police, criminals are looking for elderly or otherwise vulnerable victims.
