The Pogues: Update on Shane MacGowan’s health

His wife says he prays “for peace and love for everyone in the world.”

Shane MacGowan has had to deal with a number of health problems in the past – from a broken pelvis and pneumonia to a new set of teeth. In December 2022, The Pogues singer was hospitalized again with inflammation. The musician was later diagnosed with encephalitis. His wife Victoria Mary Clarke provides regular updates on his health on social media. She shared a new photo of the singer on October 22nd.

“Shane prays for peace and love for everyone in the world,” the journalist and author wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Below, MacGowan can be seen lying in his hospital bed and smiling at the camera. A day later, another post followed in which the couple thanked them for the “kind messages and prayers”.

Encephalitis refers to inflammation of all or parts of the brain tissue. Symptoms can range from fever, headache or seizures to loss of movement and difficulty speaking. Since the rare disease can be life-threatening, it must be treated urgently. Especially since MacGowan contracted shingles and the infection spread to his eye, he must remain under constant treatment.

In May 2023, the musician received a visit from Bruce Springsteen, who was in Dublin at the time for three headline shows. Clarke also shared a photo on X that showed the two artists. “What a great honor and wonderful experience to be visited by the boss,” she wrote in the post. “Such a thoroughly wonderful man and a total genius,” she continued.
