On November 30, 2023, Shane MacGowan died of pneumonia at the age of 65. His The Pogues colleague Spider Stacy extensively honored the Irish singer-songwriter in a long article and, above all, highlighted his “outstanding character”.
Shane MacGowan changed Spider Stacy’s life
In the piece for “Mojo,” Spider Stacy described his deceased colleague as a “hero” – and they would “live forever.” Furthermore, MacGowan was much more than just a person in the band in which he played. He called him “a friend” without whom his life “would have been completely different.” Their friendship has “deepened” over the years.
The Pogues = best band in the world?
Stacy also pays tribute to him, writing that he was “a genius who could bring the hopes and fears, the sad, tarnished glories of human existence, into such extraordinary forms.”
The musician continued: “Somewhere near the end of our first tour, I told Shane that I thought we were the best band in the world. He scoffed. ‘Of course we are, damn it!’ And with this self-confidence they would have continued making music.
