‘De Poezenkrant’ is closing down after fifty years. Number 70, the edition that will be in stores from this week, will be the last newspaper to be published.
Magazine maker Piet Schreuders reports this in an interview NRC .
The first magazine came out in February 1974. In The Poezenkrant contains many news, messages and stories about domestic cats.
,,I think The Poezenkrant has had its time,” says Schreuders in conversation with the newspaper. “The internet is already clogged with cats. And what I add is not so much more. I feel like I’ve done it all. It’s starting to bother me a bit, I say very softly. I would rather not upset the many loyal enthusiasts, but at a certain point you have to be tough, also with yourself.”
Over the years there were many great writers and artists contributing to it The Poezenkrant delivered, such as Willem Frederik Hermans and photographer Ed van der Elsken. The magazine appeared irregularly. In 2004 a large book was published about the rich history of The Poezenkrant . In 2015, the Amsterdam Public Library dedicated an exhibition to the remarkable medium.
