The referee had to dig an insect out of the tennis player’s eye.
PDO
Irish judge Fergus Murphy certainly could not predict what kind of assignment he would get Jan-Lennard Struff (ATP-65) and by Pedro Cachin (ATP-67) when refereeing a match between.
In the quarterfinals of the ATP Masters 1000 in Madrid, the second set was underway when Cachin suddenly asked Murphy for help.
The cameras zoomed in on the Argentinian player squinting his eyes so the referee could remove what appeared to be a small insect.
Murphy helped Cachin and after a little fumbling he succeeded, even though the ivy operation didn’t look easy.
– What the hell, is there a bug? Murphy has a new job description. And now he has an insect in the wee rill, we can continue, Eurosport Arne Six explained.
Struff to victory
Struff was waiting on his own side of the field, when the referee poked the eye of the German ace’s opponent in a dugout that lasted about a minute. The special episode ended with Murphy grinning as he presented his findings to the audience.
Struff had won the first set in a tiebreak 7–6 (9–7), but Cachin was leading the second set before the insect intervened. After a scrimmage, Struff got up from behind with the help of a pass break. However, Cachin gathered himself and took the set in the tiebreak 7–6 (10–8).
Struff won a very even match after taking the three-set 6–3 and taking the entire match to his name with a 2–1 set win.
Also Finland’s number one player Emil Ruusuvuori played in the Madrid tournament. He lost in the second round to the ATP ranking number two, the tournament’s number one seed For Carlos Alcaraz batch 1–2.
