The skate cut the former NHL player by Adam Johnson29, broke his neck last Saturday in the British EIHL league with tragic consequences: the man lost his life.
Since 1995, at least 14 other hockey players have experienced the same dark fate.

Boris Sadecky, 2021
Slovakian professional hockey player who played for Bratislava Capitals Boris Sadecky unexpectedly shortened to ice against Dornbirn Bulldogs on 30.10.2021.
– It was the last change of the set. Suddenly, the opponent’s player fell to his knees and then lay on the ice. I wondered what he was trying to do when no other player was even close. At the same time, the buzzer rang and we left the locker room, Dornbirn’s coach Kai Suikkanen recounted the events of the tragedy to Iltalehti in 2021.
After being shortened, Sadecky was taken to the hospital, where the 24-year-old center died on November 3, 2021.
According to his relatives, Sadecky had suffered from mild heartburn on the day of the game.
More detailed examinations revealed that the man had a myocarditis, which could have caused the heart to stop in the middle of an ICEHL league game.

Timur Faizutdinov, 2021
Timur Faizutdinov had the puck hit by an opponent on March 12, 2021. The 19-year-old Russian defender lost consciousness in the situation and was taken to the intensive care unit.
– The area where the puck hit should be covered by the cover. The cover should work if it is in place. Unfortunately, this was not the case, the doctor of the Russian national ice hockey team and St. Petersburg SKA Yegor Kozlov said in an interview with Sport-Express.
Four days later, Faizutdinov passed away. According to Allhockey.ru, the cause was cardiac arrest.
Faizutdinov was the captain of the St. Petersburg junior team.
Alexander Orekhov, 2016
Only 16 years old Alexander Orekhov got a lump on his neck on 14.1.2016.
The puck came at a speed of more than 160 kilometers per hour and broke the young man’s neck. In the same stroke, the carotid artery was damaged, resulting in cardiac arrest.
Orehov was rushed to the hospital, where he was induced into a coma. It did not save the captain of the junior team of Metallurg Novokuznetsk. of The Standard he passed away three weeks later on February 4, 2016.
Orehov’s cause of death was reported to be heart failure.
Dmitri Utchaikin, 2013

Olympia player Maxim Koposov caught a puck in the chest mid-game in February 2012.
The only 16-year-old player fell to the ice from the force of the blow, but then tried to get back to the substitution fence on his own feet – with poor success.
The doctor tried to revive Koposov after the wild beating, but the Russian teenager fell into a coma and died. The cause of death was cardiac arrest.
According to Fox News, the shocking tragedy happened in Russia in the Penza region, more than 600 kilometers southeast of Moscow.
Kyle Fundytus, 2011
Played in Edmonton train leagues Kyle Fundytus16, blocked the shot so that the puck hit the youngster in the neck.
The boy was taken to the hospital for surgery right after the hit, but he died the next day.

Jessica Pickard, 2009
The Carleton Mustangs girls team played a practice match against the boys team on a Friday night in February in the province of New Brunswick on the east coast of Canada.
Mustangs defender Jessica Pickard, 15, skated for the exchange. He was having trouble breathing for some reason.

Alexey Cherepanov, 2008
Promising striker Alexei Cherepanov, 19, fought himself into the substitution fence in a KHL game. Then he got shorter Jaromir Jagrin beside.

STT reports that based on the autopsy, Cherepanov suffered from heart problems and should not have played hockey.
According to the blood and urine samples, the discus player had also used doping substances.
Cherepanov was a top prospect drafted by the New York Rangers in the 2007 first round at number 17.

Jaxon Logan, 2005
Jaxon Logan18, threw himself in front of the puck with fatal consequences in January 2005.
The opponent’s puck snapped the Provo Ice Cats player in the ribs so that he could no longer breathe properly. He left the ice and was shortened to the bench afterwards.
– Some people noticed that he was limping, but you see that five times in a game, so no one thought that there was anything special, the team’s Vice-Captain Mark Ostebo recalled of desert.com in the interview.
Ice Cats head coach Matt Beaudry, who also worked as a firefighter, however, soon realized the situation and began to revive Logan. Five minutes later, paramedics arrived.

Sergejs Zoltoks, 2004
In November 2004 Sergejs Zoltoks suddenly passed out in Minsk in the middle of the game. However, the man woke up and went to the dressing room. He died there, at the age of 31.
According to the autopsy, Žoltoks’ heart had stopped. He had already visited the hospital earlier that year for observation due to heart problems.
– This is tragic. Žoltoks was a brilliant fellow, thoughtful and well-behaved person. He was a true professional. He took care of his body, did not drink alcohol, coached the Latvian national team Curt Lindstrom told STT after the tragedy.
Žoltoks was playing for HK Riga 2000 when he passed away. It was the NHL lockout. In the Taala League, the man played 588 regular season games with an output of 111+147=258.

Stéphane Morin, 1998
Stéphane Morin collapsed on the bench in the middle of a match on October 6, 1998. The player’s heart had stopped, and the medical staff failed to revive him.
Morin was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Graham Christie, 1997
The puck hit Graham Christie20, in the throat in November 1997 when he blocked a shot in an SJHL series game in the United States.
The player who was enjoying himself on the grounds of Senter was quickly rushed to the intensive care unit of Saskatoon University Hospital, but that didn’t help either. The Nipawin Hawks player passed away a week later.
Christie suffered brain damage because her heart had stopped following the brutal attack.
Bengt Åkerblom, 1995
Bengt Åkerblom died like Johnson when a skate cut his neck open in a training match between Mora IK and Brynäs in October 1995.
The cut from the skate damaged Åkerblom’s trachea and carotid artery. The Mora player was rushed to the hospital for surgery, but it didn’t help. Åkerblom died at the age of 28.
Åkerblom’s Helena-wife had asked just a couple of days earlier why the man didn’t wear a neck protector. It could have prevented the tragedy.
On January 1, 1996, neck protection became mandatory in Sweden.
– Have your little children, brother or girlfriend use them. They exist, and for a reason. This can happen, and probably will, again, the wife said in 2017 Aftonbladet in the interview.
Unfortunately, he was right.
