The paper house: Korea. Aldo Grasso’s review

LA HOUSE OF PAPER: KOREA
Genre: Action, dramatic
Direction: Álex Pina. With Lee Si-Woo, Eugene Ko, Yunjin Kim, Jeon Jong-Seo. On Netflix

One of Netflix’s most globally successful titles becomes a franchise. The paper house: Korearemake of the Spanish series created by Álex Pina, it is interesting from the point of view of the transnational dynamics of the audiovisual industryeven before its content rendering, since it marks the meeting between the European tradition and the Asian world.

On the wave of the success of Squid GameKorea and the so-called “Asia-Pacific” markets are less and less distant and this remake marks a further turning point.

The paper house: Korea it is truly a faithful reproduction of the original; if the trigger is that of a dystopian horizon, with the two Koreas reunited and with a single currency, in which the young people of the North who listened to K-pop in spite of the regime can finally travel to the free world of the South, discovering however the distortions of capitalism, the rest of the narrative is deja vu.

“The professor” is the criminal mastermind who organizes a robbery at the state mint, by recruiting destitute and marginalized who choose the same city names as the original: Berlin, Rio, Denver, Moscow and the narrator Tokyo, despite the turbulent relations between Korea and Japan.

For those who appreciate reassuring remakes and do not disdain the discovery of other cultures.
