The Ottens family in Haren takes a ‘photo’ in 1923 with their dog, pigeons and weeds. Now cars are sold in their farm

This section usually shows a specific place or event. This week a family portrait of a Haren family, the Ottens family from Haren. Memories in the picture portrays the history of Groningen through the Groninger Archives and the Northern Maritime Museum/Museum aan de A.

A ‘photo’ in my own garden seemed like a good idea and the weather cooperated that late summer day. The people portrayed were also able to do the mise-en-scene for the photo themselves. A bunch of white meadows on the table, the pigeons just belong there and how peacefully their faithful dog lies in the tender grass.

Hands in her lap

The admission at home was probably a necessity. Mother Willempien Ottens-Kapma suffered from rheumatism, see her hands in her lap. A trip to the city for a family photo is no mean feat. She died three years later at the age of 53. Father Jacob Ottens had spent his life among the vegetables and the cows, a warm farmer and cow milker as he was. You can also see that in his hands. The story does not state what the daughter and sons went to do for a living.

sale of the used cars

Where was the farm in Haren? On the west side of Rijksstraatweg, not far north of the northern roundabout. Used cars are now being sold.
